Vintage Fiesta Sugar Bowl

Vintage Fiestaware sugar bowl

The vintage fiesta sugar bowl was quickly revised within just a few months of production, so by March of 1936 we had what most collectors are familiar with for the fiesta covered sugar, but those first few months of manufacturing included a flat bottomed sugar bowl (think flat bottom teacups) that also had a deeper foot and a wider plange on the lid (3/8" deep). This version was marked "HLC USA" impressed from the mold in the bottom without three bottom rings around the mark. It was only made in the first five original colors, before turquoise was introduced. The revised version of the sugar bowl will have rounded inside bottoms and the foot would be hand turned with the rings applied by the jiggering machine and slightly flared out by a hand tool. The lid flange was reduced to 1/8" deep. Both examples had a separtaly cast lid (finial) that would have to be hand attatched before glazing. In the 1950s the tool for flaring out the foot was redesigned slightly to produce less of a flare. Collectors should look for nice examples with well defined rings on the lid and foot and a straight finial that wasn't applied crooked by the rush of production at the factory.
